Unisa has confirmed that a Professor from one of their departments has tested positive for the coronavirus. After getting confirmation from his doctor, he has reported his results to his line manager and any staff he might have came into contact with.
There is no certainty about when and where he contracted the virus. However, he returned from George in Cape Town where he was during his leave period.
When he reported to the office on 18 March, he stated that he was not feeling well and has been on leave since then and is now in recovery at home.
After the confirmation of his result came, Unisa has put in safety measures. These safety measures include having the "affected" colleagues sent home so that they could self-isolate and they have been advised to get tested for the virus.
The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (WMM) Building on the Muckleneuk Campus has also been closed as a precautionary measure and disinfection of the building is being planned. Other building have also been closed for safety. Disinfection has also been done across campuses.
Staff members have been provided with sanitisers, gloves and masks wherever possible.
