UKZN Staff Member Tests Positive For Covid-19

It has been reported that UKZN has had its first case of the coronavirus after a staff member tested positive.

There have been reports that a staff member at UKZN has tested positive for the coronavirus. This would be UKZN's first case.

The staff member has been in self-isolation since 16 March and started showing symptoms the day after. She hasn't reported for work at UKZN since 12 March. Other staff and students have not been in contact with the staff member and therefore have a low risk of having been infected.

On 19 March, the staff member was tested and got a positive result on the 22nd.

The individual was concerned about being exposed to the virus after returning from an event that delegates from Europe had attended in Johannesburg. Other cases have been confirmed among those who attended the event.

It has been stated that the individual stayed at home and did not receive any visitors. The staff member's symptoms are improving and it is not necessary for the individual to go to hospital just yet.

We are waiting for official confirmation from UKZN.
