University of Fort Hare students have not been getting the support other Universities do to continue the academic year during Covid-19 and have gone to social media to air their grievances by starting #SaveUFHAcademicYear.

Covid-19 has forced students to adjust to an abnormal way of teaching to keep up the academic year. However, UFH students have been disadvantaged and have now been started posting #SaveUFHAcademicYear on social media.

On 30 June, a student said, "About 60% of students at Fort Hare have not received their data for online learning. The first 33% of students have not received their permits. There is no catch up plan provided by the institution. Tomorrow online learning is starting."

It was announced that from 1 June, all institutions were to continue with the academic year online. However, the less advantaged Universities have not been able to follow this and students haven't gotten much communication, assistance or stable plans from their University.

This causes great concern and makes one think of Nzimande echoing "no student left behind" because students are feeling neglected and not supported by Government and their institution. Students have also complained that UFH has made many empty promises.

UFH has made learning materials available online and postponed assessments but have not provided data and devices to majority of students to actually access these resources. UFH has said that laptops will be delivered to students at the end of July, which means students are further delaying the continuation of their academic programme.

On students returning to campus, UFH has not given specific dates for travel permits yet and they are currently assessing if they are ready for students to come back. Once these are done, students will be given their permits.
