These Grades Will Be At School On Monday

The Basic Education Department has decided to cut down on the number of grades that will be allowed to return to school on Monday 6 July. They have warned to ignore fake messages circulating to say that school pupils will not be returning on the 6th.

The department has decided that only learners in Grade 6, Grade R and Grade 11 will be returning to school on Monday. This decision will be in effect in all provinces.

Other grades will be phased in using a different approach in July. This will be done in line with the timeframe in the gazette published by the Minister on 29 June 2020.

“We will adjust the reopening phases based on the risk-adjusted strategy which is a considered attempt to balance our approach to school reopening, taking into account all factors that affect the work we do.” said Motshekga.

Motshekga said the decision to reduce the number of learners allowed to return to school was influenced by the increase in infections.

“We are guided in this by an observation of the rising numbers of community transmissions throughout the country."

“We recognise that schools are based in communities and learners live in the same affected communities and therefore a careful balancing act must be maintained.”

The department aims to phase in all of the remaining grades by August 2020.
