Sexual offences in schools have fast become a common trend among teachers who take advantage of learners. The South African Council for Educators (SACE) shared a shocking list of misconducts within the basic education sector on Wednesday.

The Department of Basic Education spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga confirms the South African Council for Educators (SACE) report, which reveals the scandalous behaviour of 11 teachers who were fired by the department for sexual offences and a range of other charges.

Mhlanga said SACE presented an annual report which is inclusive of My Teaching Team (MTT) known to be Umalusi, and SACE working in solidarity with basic education.

The report is said to be in relation with the work done in the 2020/2021 financial year and the figures presented in the report are believed to be accurate.

The council received 443 cases against teachers, including unethical misconduct against educators during the period under review.

The charges included corporal punishment and assault, sexual misconduct, which included rape, indecent assault, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and verbal abuse or use of improper language, victimisation, harassment and defamation among other things.

The department is said to be concerned about the growing number of teachers who have been fired for gross misconduct.

It’s really unfortunate that we have to do this to our educators who have signed a code of conduct and have committed to doing their work to the professional standard, but they don’t do it and they have to be traced down and fired by the department.

The South African Council of Educators was appearing before Parliament on Wednesday when it listed cases of misconduct against teachers. Mhlanga further said it appears as if educators forget the code of conduct they signed to be teachers when committing these offences.
