On Thursday this past week, students at the University of Johannesburg's Auckland Park campus in Johannesburg staged a protest against the institution’s mandatory vaccination policy. The university does not allow on-campus students, who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19.

UJ currently requires that all of its students to produce and upload proof that they have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to gain access to its campus and facility.

UJ SRC President Mxolisi Manana, who calls the vaccination policy “draconian”, says that the university did not do enough research to determine why implementation of the policy is necessary.

“The University of Johannesburg is a centre for critical intellectual inquiry yet there's no research that has been done that is sufficient to come up with such a draconian policy as this of the mandatory vaccination policy”

Manana adds that the university has made it so that if a student refuses to get vaccinated for any reason, they are required to produce negative PCR test results on a weekly basis, which most financially disadvantaged students would be unable to afford.

The SRC also argues that the mandated vaccine policy also amounts to an infringement of bodily integrity on the rights of students who opt not to get vaccinated.

So far, the SRC has also submitted a memorandum of internal demands to the university’s management, which was received by the Senior Director of Student Relations, Godfrey Helani.

As it stands, students have until the end of the month to get fully vaccinated or risk de-registration.
