Some teachers are now showing concern and are worried that even with the delayed reopening of schools, returning to schools still won't be safe for them. Teachers are due back at schools on 1 February with learners following on 15 February.

Teachers shared their views through a survey where they say teachers spend a lot of their school days pleading with learners to adhere to health protocols.

They have said that the amount of time it takes to settle learners down and address them is not conducive to teaching.

Vision Bearer at an online learning platform called Zibuza.net, Malcolm Mooi, said:

We have to commend government on all the efforts they've put in to make sure that schools are safe. When you look at the protocols, the concerns from teachers that learners are not following those protocols and I think this is where we're sitting in between a rock and a hard place in terms of how you balance the social nature and the human nature of learners in terms of their need to engage with their friends.

Microsoft forms were sent to teachers and they were contacted through phone calls to get their input for this survey on what they are experiencing and support they need.

Over 400 teachers have passed due to Covid-19.

90% of survey respondents expressed concern surrounding the virus.

Fears now arise as the virus can be carried to and from homes of learners and teachers and brought into schools leading to far greater consequences which Covid has shown us too many times.

Even though government is said to have done all that they can, teachers still don't feel safe as learners form groups and disregard social distancing.

Small instances such as a learner forgetting their stationery and having to borrow from other learners is even a risk.

"Learners appear to not have any fear around Covid or contracting it," said Bearer.

There are however teachers who are optimistic and are up to the task, said Bearer, "Teachers definitely want to get back in the classroom ... when you look at all the learning and teaching time that was lost last year, teachers want to make up for that".

Teachers have expressed that they are fatigued from the rotational timetable where they have to teach lessons multiple times a day in a repetitive nature.

They will also be much wiser and prepared from lessons learned from last year.
