Not even a year after the University of Cape Town (UCT) Campus Fires in April of 2021, another fire was reported to have started near the university’s Upper Campus on the 5th of January 2022.

In April of 2021, UCT staff, students, and neighbouring citizens watched helplessly as a fire ravaged through the University and neighbouring buildings.

Important historical buildings such as Mostert’s Mill, and UCT’s Jagger Library which was home to the African Studies collection, took extensive damage, whilst students were left displaced as residences went up in flames.

Once again, on Wednesday, the 5th of January 2022, UCT faced yet another potential fire crisis. UCT’s VARSITY News arrived on the scene promptly as the fires raged, and they identified the fire as having been located just behind the UCT Sports Centre.

Campus Protection Services (CPS) are reported to have been “quickly on the scene ready to provide assistance to the Cape Town Fire Rescue Services”, according to the breaking report.

UCT’s Vice-Chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng has also confirmed this report, adding that the fire was “reported at 11:30 pm…fire services department was on site within 15 minutes and the fire was declared fully doused at 1:45 am”.

She also added that no one was placed in any immediate danger and that the fire was far enough from UCT buildings to have avoided any potential damage. The cause of fire is still unclear, but it has been said that a formal investigation will be conducted within the coming days.
