The Anton Lembede Mathematics, Science and Technology Academy prides themselves on being able to teach 600 pupils since they have more than 20 classrooms.
KwaZulu-Natal's premier Sihle Zikalala visited the school on its opening day and welcomed the learners.
The school was named after the first President of the ANC Youth League, Anton Lembede. He was described as a man who was passionate about education.
Senzo Mchunu, the Public Service and Administration Minister, conceptualized the facility after he visited a school in Turkey in 2012 when he was the Education MEC.
KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu stated that the school will produce top-quality learners as Natural Science has been replaced with Physical Science.
The school plans to enrol 50% of its learners from underprivileged communities free of charge and the remaining half will be fee-paying learners.
Admission for the 2022 academic year is now open, so learners are encouraged to apply if they are interested in attending a Science and Technology school.
