Less than 3000 children are still waiting to be placed in schools in the Western Cape province.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed that this is a difficult process because they have exhausted all of their options as far as possible last year to try and get as many learners into schools.
However, the department managed to make progress, having placed 1 500 learners in schools in the previous weeks.
Many schools have been experiencing an influx of learners and parents at their gates, these are learners that hadn’t applied for the current academic year.
WCED spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond said that the Education Department is doing its best to place learners in classrooms.
The Western Cape Education Department will have more clarity on which schools in the province have space for the unplaced learners after the first 10 days of the academic calendar have lapsed.
In a radio interview on CapeTalk, the Western Cape Education Department spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond said:
We are analysing schools very carefully to see if they are holding spaces for learners or if the class numbers are low so that we can try and place more learners in those schools.
