School Assistants to be of great help around the country

More than 300 000 youth in South Africa have been employed as education and general assistants, more than 19 000 will be welcomed to address academic disruptions caused by Covid-19 in the Free State. 

Education and general assistants will be employed to assist teachers and help to address the academic disruptions caused by Covid-19. This will relieve teachers' workload and support learners while also providing an opportunity for the youth aged 18 to 35 to gain work skills and experience. 

The job opportunities which the general school assistants have include screeners, reading coaches, library assistants,clerk assistants, admin support, food and sports assistants, cleaners, brigades, security, janitors and handy men.

Cheif Education Specialist, Tello Khodumo says that the Department of Education is able to address all the backlogs they were experiencing such as vandalism of schools or issues of maintenance. He says that the general assistants will come in handy in terms of taking care of these issues. He explains that education assistants will help teachers to achieve the learning that was intended for all the learners initially. 

Mabeoana Intermediate School Principal, Thami Mngoma in Bloemfontein says that assistants will help to make the environment for learning and teaching more conducive. 

Assistants will receive a monthly stipend of R3500 through the Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator network for the contract period starting 1 December 2020 and ending on 31 March 2021.
