Many SASSA beneficiaries within and around Tsakani, were unfortunately victims to this tragic SASSA scam.

A woman alleging to be a social worker, visited the homes of these victims on 2 September 2020.

She told them that food parcels were available to SASSA beneficiaries and if they qualified then they would receive them.

In order to determine whether or not they qualified, the woman said that she needed their ID and SASSA cards.

However, this was not the case at all.

This was just an elaborate way to get hold of their ID numbers and swap their original SASSA cards with old ones.

Which was only discovered when these victims tried to collect their social grants the following day.

“When they inquired about the problem, they were told their money had been withdrawn,” said Tsakani police spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu.

Tsakani SAPS station commander Col Johannes Maass asked the community to be vigilant, especially senior citizens.

Police are currently on the lookout for this woman, however without a description of her, the chances of catching her are very slim.

If anyone stops by your house claiming to be from SASSA and needing your personal information, please contact the police immediately.

We would not want this to happen to anyone else.
