SADTU Fears For Eastern Cape Schools

SADTU is concerned about how schools in the Eastern Cape will handle the return of more learners. The Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary of SADTU, Chris Mdingi has commented on the matter.

"In essence and in a nutshell, we would characterise the situation in the Eastern Cape as a dire situation" said Mdingi.

He was commenting on the Education Department's decision to continue with phasing in learners.

"If other grades are to be brought in, come Monday that is gonna present itself as a serious challenge".

Mdingi was mainly concerned with how schools that lack proper infrastructure and service delivery would be able to accommodate more learners.

"This is a rural province with rural schools which were excluded in one way or the other due to the imbalances of the past, which are supposed to be redressed now".

Mdingi felt that the inequalities in the Eastern Cape education system would be exposed by Covid-19.

"Come next week this will further expose other inefficiencies and deficiencies of the system which one, in a nutshell, would refer to as social ills of the DBE, especially in a rural province like the Eastern Cape."
