The Equal Education Law Centre is a civil society organisation which offers legal support to individuals and communities where the rights of learners are harmed or affected.
Equal Education has addressed its concerns around the sale of alcohol at school functions and presented a written submission to the Basic Education Portfolio Committee in Parliament.
Jane Borman from Equal Education stated that the sale of alcohol at school functions for fundraising purposes is not worth exposing learners to underage drinking or drunk adults. The organisation believes that the harm outweighs the benefit in this case.
The Basic Education Parliamentary Committee has received the written submission from Equal Education and the next step would be for the committee to hold public hearings in different provinces.
These hearings will allow community members to voice their concerns and opinions about the bill regarding sections such as the sale of alcohol at school functions, imprisonment of parents for not sending their children to school and implementation of language policies.
Borman stated that they hope communities will get involved and voice their concerns about the issues they have seen in schools so that changes can be made.
