There has been speculation that the address will give clarity about whether schools should close or remain open.

The government's decision to reopen schools for grade 12 learners on 8 June was met with mixed reactions. The continued phasing in of learners has been no different.

Unions have recently been calling for schools to close until the end of the peak, while school governing bodies have backed the government's decision to continue with the school year.

Minister Motshekga has been in meetings with the Cabinet, as she has been consulting with unions to find a way forward for the school year.

The Basic Education Department released a statement saying said the final decision would be reached once all considerations had been made.

The President is also expected to address the alcohol and cigarette ban, as the government announced that the ban would last as long as the lockdown.
