NWU Closes Mahikeng Campus Because of Violence

Students have been partly successful in their attempts to shutdown NWU with management taking the decision to close the Mahikeng campus over concerns of violence. Protesters are unhappy about returning students who are not able to register because of unpaid fees and the shortage of accommodation for students.

The management of North West University have taken the decision to close the Mahikeng campus over fears of violence after protests intensified on Tuesday.  Students have been asked to leave the campus by 3pm.

The protests form part of the campaign by the SAUS, SA Union of Students which has issued a number of demands to the national Minister responsible for Higher Education, Dr Blade Nzimande.

The statement reads:

The NWU management is deeply concerned about the incidents of violence at our campus in Mahikeng. In solidarity with the call from the South African Union of Students (SAUS) to shut down campuses across the country, a group of students has been preventing people from entering the campus since yesterday (27 January) morning.

During the evening of 27 January, a group of senior students assaulted other students and damaged university property. These unacceptable actions were reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and a case of assault has also been opened at the Mmabatho police station. The safety of students and staff on campus is increasingly in jeopardy. Therefore, the university management has, after consultations with relevant stakeholders including the SAPS, resolved to close the campus until further notice to ensure the safety and security of stakeholders.
