Not All Schools Reopen In Gauteng

Gauteng Schools

Grade 12 pupils were set to return on Monday 3 August, however certain schools in Gauteng have not reopened yet.

This week, Grade 12 pupils were asked to return to school. However, not all schools in Gauteng were able to reopen.

It was reported by the Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, that 598 public schools reopened, while 24 were unable to.

During this week, only 35 out of 42 special schools reopened and 352 out of 437 private schools were able to reopen.

All these schools were unable to reopen due to COVID-19 cases, as well as a few being vandalized during the four week break. Those with COVID-19 cases are in process of decontaminating the classrooms for the safety of the students.

A report showed that during this period, approximately 2 099 schools were affected by the virus.

Not only were Grade 12 pupils allowed to return but also the other grades. While Grade 12 learners were expected to return on 3 August, the other grades were asked to go back to school on 24 August.

This is all according to the new school calendar that was released.

The Gauteng Department of Education announced their delight to the attendance rate of the students this week. On Monday 3 August, the attendance was at 56% which quickly increased to 76% by Wednesday.

However, the department also encourages those students who have not yet returned to school to apply for online learning to avoid falling behind with school work. As it is crucial for learners to finish this year with a positive note.

Unfortunately the pandemic has resulted in teachers feeling the need to resign which is not beneficial to the students. 3 699 teachers indicated that they would like to resign.

However, this might make room for many new teachers who are looking for schools to teach at.
