Applying for the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant can sometimes prove to be a hassle when you do not have a phone, so what is the best alternative option for this cohort?

According to the South African Social Security (Sassa), volunteers are available to assist you. You can locate your nearest councillor community worker who can help you in locating and identifying the nearest volunteers in your community to assist you with your application.

Members of the parliamentary committee asked the department how people in rural areas would be able to apply for the grant because many do not have access to cell phones.

In response, the Social Development Department stated that in order to reduce people's dependency on government workers, Sassa has made sure that candidates can apply using either a smartphone or a regular cell phone, according to the department.

In addition to this, the department further stated that Sassa would risk crashing its system if more people were encouraged to visit its offices to apply for the SRD grant. The bulk of Sassa's beneficiaries, they added, have access to the online application.

In response to the resulting access, the department stated that it has been collaborating with non-government organisations on the ground across the country to help applicants without cellphones complete their online applications.

The agency has also said that it has employed widely accessible technologies to ensure that persons in remote locations have access to the online application and are no longer relying on Sassa staff for assistance.
