The Minister has welcomed the President's announcement to close schools until August.

Several organisations were consulted with before the announcement was made. The following was agreed to:

  • 4 week break starting on 27 July and ending on 24 August 2020.
  • Grade 12 learners and teachers will receive a 1 week break  from 27 July - 31 July
  • Grade 7 learners will return on 10 August 2020
  •  The academic year will be extended beyond 2020
  • School Feeding programme will continue during the break
  • Arrangements for special schools will be made

The department hopes the break will give the system time to deal with operating under the new conditions.

Director-general of Basic Education, Mathanzima Mweli spoke on Power FM explaining the factors the president considered before announcing the decision.

These include:

  1. Increasing infections in communities
  2. Increased psychological and emotional stress
  3. The strain on the health system in some parts of the country
  4. Some schools taking a strain and finding it very difficult to operate

During the interview, Mweli stood by the decision made by the president while parents criticised it.

Minister Motshekga has urged schools to make arrangements with parents for learners to get work or materials to help them remain engaged during the break.

She says learners will also be given work when they collect food or when they leave school on 24 July 2020.
