More than 180 Learners At Eastern Cape School Test Positive

Learners at a school in the Eastern Cape have tested positive for covid-19. Department officials are working to contain the spread of the virus.

The learners who tested positive are from Makaula Senior Secondary School, located in Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape.

The spokesperson of the provincial Health Department, Sizwe Kupelo said: "The intention is to rescue those who have not tested positive. We are also going to do the risk analysis and look at their contacts. We are going to look into all the necessary precautions that we have to take now and put this situation under control"

Kupelo has appealed to all members of the public to take covid-19 seriously by being cautious.

Chris Mdingi of the The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU), has said the union does not take kindly to the rise of infections in schools.

SADTU has repeatedly been calling for schools to close, and has been requesting meetings with the education department.

In a letter addressed to Themba Kojana, superintendent-general of the provincial education department, the union wrote:

“We call upon our Eastern Cape department of education to close the schools with immediate effect until the department is ready‚ as life matters to most of us‚”

The union will have a meeting today with the Department in order to discuss a way forward for schools in the Eastern Cape.
