Matric Dance Cancelled Due To COVID-19

Matric Dances have been cancelled in an effort to give matriculants more time to prepare for their exams. This may have a positive effect on their results, but not on the design industry.

This year Grade 12 learners find themselves in a very difficult time as they have missed so much of the school year due to COVID-19. As they approach the exam season, lots of pressure is put on them to do well.

Which is why thousands of schools have decided to cancel their matric dance events. They feel that it is more important for the learners to focus on preparing for the exams rather than a matric dance.

Nonhlanhla Mkhatshwa, a Grade 12 learner, thinks that cancelling the matric dances is a good idea, because they need this time to study and improve their marks in order to get into good tertiary institutions.

Although students and parents may agree with the cancellation of the matric dances, it has a negative impact on the design industry, who look forward to the matric season.

Bonolo Mashilo, a fashion designer, says that matric farewells account for a large portion of their revenue each year.

Mashilo found that due to COVID-19 fewer girls were coming to them to have their dresses made, which has a negative impact on their sales this year.

Nkululeko Lehapa also felt this impact as less than 100 suits were sold this year.

Before COVID-19, his company sold over 1 000 suits every year to matriculants.

However, what really matters are the 2020 matriculants. Cancelling the matric dance will benefit them greatly.

As this time will be spent preparing for their exams and getting all the help they can get from their teachers.
