Matric Results

Matrics are used to having to wait only a few days after New Year to hear their exam results but things for the class of 2020 are going to be very different to the Matric classes that went before them. A revised school calendar has been released which details the dates that exams will be written, but also shows that Matrics will be waiting longer than usual to get their exam results.

It has run like clockwork for many years. Matric exams have been completed in November, leaving time for marking in December and some final checking over the holiday period.

Then one of the first major events of the new calendar year has always been the release of Matric exam results in the first full week of the year. The disruptions caused by Covid-19 have messed with the schedule so that the Matric learners of 2020 will have a different schedule.

The revised school year calendar for the year has been released by the Education Department.

The Matric exams will be completed by the 15th of December which is also the formal end of the academic year. Exam marking will still take place after that but it is expected to be completed by the 22nd of January 2021.  The Matric results will then be released on the 23rd of February 2021.

Details have not been released yet by the IEB, Independent Examaninations Board, about their matric exam schedule. Normally their exams, which are written by most independent schools, are written at the same time and their results are released a day or two before the public school Matric results.

Currently public schools are closed for a four week break while the number of Covid-19 infections continues to rise in many parts of the country.  When making his announcement, President Cyril Ramaphosa specifically mentioned that it was public schools who would be closing, leaving the option for private/independent schools to remain open if they chose to.  Many private/independent schools had expressed their concerns to government that if they were forced to close, and could not charge fees, they would be forced to close their doors.
