An increase is now being seen in the number of learners testing positive for Covid in Free State.
Last week Friday saw 201 learners and 116 teachers having tested positive in total at that time.
At Grey College, 53 learners and 7 staff members have tested positive. This school is said to be one of the best schools in the southern region of the continent.
The Free State Education Department's Spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, said:
You have learners here from all across South Africa ... We also have a situation where as Bloemfontein, we are located within 6 other provinces. So we have a situation where these learners were, in most cases, these cases increase when learners are coming from home. That is the main problem.
The school is said to have proper systems in place and follow protocols religiously.
Deep cleaning and other processes will take place at the school to make sure that when learners return on the 23rd, that it is safe for them.
We believe that all the measures are in place to make sure that these cases are not increasing.
The school will have catch up plans in place to make sure learners don't lose out too much.
In some districts in the province, numbers are said to be going down.
The department is also making plans to have learners in school everyday.
One intervention the department is looking into is reinstating teacher assistants at schools as it was found that they were very helpful.
