Students who are not supposed to go back to campuses should refrain from doing so, so that situations on campuses can remain safe and as Nzimande says, this will be "undermining management".

Nzimande has said that all Universities have provided dates for when students are expected to return in line with the phased return approach being taken and parents are encouraged to take part in keeping students at home who are not part of groups allowed to return.

"Universities never open at the same time. Never reopen at the same time. They all do this according to their own plans and character", says Nzimande. The return of students will happen at different times at different Universities according to their state of readiness.

Twenty of the  twenty six Universities in South Africa have welcomed students back on campuses and residences.

Full 33% of students allowed to return will have returned from 17 June until late August. Nzimande outlined the following dates for the return of students to the remaining Universities:

  • Sefako Makgatho University 13 July
  • University of Fort Hare 13 July
  • Mangosuthu University of Technology 17 July
  • Walter Sisulu University 1 August
  • Tshwane University of Technology 3 August
  • University of Free State 31 August

The Minister also stated that the 2020 academic year will only be completed in early 2021 and that this means the next academic year of 2021 will start late and need to be adjusted.

Intake of students for 2021 will also therefore have to be later than usual. On this, he stated, "This will require a change in the normal academic year to ensure that the 2021 academic year finishes within the 2021 calendar year".
