KZN Schools Now In Recovery After Devastating Floods

Authorities have provided the nation with an update on the matters relating to the devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Social Cluster led by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, Health Minister Joe Phaahla and the Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu has provided the nation with an update on the matters relating to the devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal.  

To date, it has been reported that 630 schools have been damaged by the floods, 101 are inaccessible and 124 schools have seen extensive damage. 

The disaster has claimed the lives of more than 60 learners, one teacher and one food handler. 

Although schooling is proceeding in some areas, in the afflicted areas learning and teaching remain uneven as the Department works to ensure that schools can be rebuilt or refurbished. 

Meanwhile, the Basic Education Department has explained how schools will now start the process of picking up the pieces, either fixing or rebuilding the schools.

According to the department, it is providing support to the Provincial Education Department in various ways, including curriculum recovery. 

The Social Cluster has also reported that school attendance has increased to 90%.
