Kidnapped Gauteng Learners Are Safely Home, Says Department
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has been under immense pressure due to recent reports of kidnapped learners in their schools. The department has however shared new developments on some of the abducted learners.
The Gauteng Department of Education has released a media statement welcoming the safe return of two grade 10 girls who were allegedly kidnapped in Pretoria.
The Gauteng Department of Education said the pair, aged 15 and 16 years returned safely back home on Wednesday. They attend Hoerskool Staatspresident C R Swart in Pretoria and were allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the event occurred on Tuesday in Mamelodi East when one of the students visited a fellow classmate after school and took her to the local clinic.
As they walked to the clinic, two unknown men driving a Mini Cooper approached them, reportedly forcing them into the vehicle and forced them into taking drugs.
Once the girls were in a confused state after taking drugs, the men took them to their homes and ordered that they steal laptops and cell phones.
The suspects subsequently took the girls to a mall where they managed to flee.
Further, the statement said due to the unstable condition girls were in, and not aware about where they were, the girls opted to sleep in a secluded area for the night of Tuesday, 16 November 2021.
However, the girls gained conscience the following morning and were supported by residents in the neighbourhood to find their way home, the department said.
The statement additionally reported that another Grade 8 girl pupil from the same school was said to be missing on Wednesday after her school contacted her home out of concern about her continued absence.
The mother of the learner confirmed that she has been missing for two weeks, since 3 November 2021. Her mother told the school that when she left, she was visiting a friend and never returned home.
The department sent a message of hope to the missing learners and welcomed the safe return of others. The statement further affirmed that the investigations for these harrowing acts are ongoing.
