Independent Schools Respond To COSAS

Eyes have been on Independent schools today as COSAS has followed through on its threat. COSAS is hoping independent schools will buckle under pressure, but ISASA has other plans.

Executive Director of ISASA, Lebogang Montjane told News24 that many independent schools are doing online learning and COSAS protesting on school premises will not make a difference.

"It is regrettable that Cosas is targeting independent schools. Independent schools have [never] actually closed. When the president shut down [during Level 5 lockdown], all our members went to remote learning".

ISASA is the Independent Schools Association of South Africa, and it makes a distinction between public and independent schools.

It describes independent schools as being privately governed, unlike public schools which are controlled by the state.

Montjane added that independent schools have their own calendar and have not lost any school days, as they closed when their holidays began.

"It is also important to note that the president did not close schools for four weeks, the president closed schools for many [other] grades but the Grade 12s are going back to school next Wednesday and the following [week] Grade 7 and I don't understand why Cosas focuses on private schools," he said.

He said some COSAS members made their way to independent schools today, but got turned away by the police as they did not get permission to protest.
