The Gauteng Department Education has been struggling to keep up with the high demand for school placements. As a result of this, hundreds of pupils in the province have not been allocated a school, but the department is committed to resolving the issue.

While speaking at an opening ceremony of a new school in Sedibeng in the Vaal, Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi stated that 700 online applicants had not been placed. The MEC went on to state the issue would be resolved by the end of the month.

The provincial department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona says that they have made progress in resolving the issue, adding that only about 300 pupils remain unplaced.

Mabona further states that they have also been receiving a lot of late applications since reopening the application system on Wednesday last week.

Mabona also admits that the application system has been experiencing capacity issues and as a result, most parents have opted to use district offices as a preferred alternative. The department expects to give an update on the number of late applications that have been processed so far.

When it comes to managing late applications they will only avail schools that have been confirmed to still have available spaces. Schools that have reached capacity will automatically be taken out of the system.
