Nzimande said his department aims to address sexual harassment and gender-based violence in the post-schooling sector. This will be done by using a gender-based violence prevention framework.

In 2019, former Higher Education Minister Naledi Pandor set up a task team to look into gender-based violence in the tertiary sector. The task team began its work in 2019 and made recommendations to cabinet once enough work had been done.

“Those recommendations and the framework have now been adopted by Parliament. I will be gazetting that shortly. I call upon all our institutions to use the framework to develop their own measures to combat gender-based violence. This is historic and very important.” said Nzimande.

The Minister is calling on all tertiary institutions to use the framework as a guide to developing their own measures to fight gender-based violence.

"We are amongst the first, if not the first sector in government to actually adopt our own framework in the post-school education and training sector to deal with gender-based violence."

Nzimande hopes other sectors will follow if the framework is successful in tertiary institutions.
