The Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba has urged people studying or working in the health field to scrutinize the adverts offering bursaries and internships as many of them are scams.
This comes after a scam advert circulated via text messages being sent to people inviting them for an interview at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
Modiba says that people must go through the advert to determine whether it is legitimate before submitting their details.
He says that people should check whether the dates are consistent throughout the application and whether the logo on the documents match the official government department logos.
The various government departments also have official social media pages where they share information about legitimate bursaries and internships so people can cross check to see if the adverts that are circulating have been shared on these official accounts.
"The other catch is usually these kind of [scam] opportunities are linked to some payment of some sort... government will never do that, we never ask people to contribute anything when they are applying for jobs or internships." said Modiba.
The Department says they understand that due to high unemployment in the country, people are desperate to apply for jobs and internships but they are urging them to be cautious so that they do not get scammed.
The public has been encouraged to report any scams regarding bursaries and internships to the relevant departments and authorities so that it can be investigated.
