Gauteng Needs More Educators, Says MEC

Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi has given an update about the schooling system as the province recently recorded the highest number of cases in South Africa.

Lesufi said as of 9 July, 2131 public schools are open and 105 schools are closed. He also added that grade R has recorded the lowest attendance since schools reopened.

He said that 3699 educators who are above 60 have requested to be released early because their age group is at great risk of falling critically ill.

Lesufi said in light of this, the department would need to look into recruiting 6947 educators in order to replace the teachers and save the school year.

He assured parents that the department would continue to provide support to parents who are not ready to let their children return to school.

Although children are allowed to learn from home, they will still be required to take exams at school. This is a quality control measure that the department has put in place.
