The Department of Education in Gauteng has announced online application dates for Grade 1 and Grade 8 school admissions for 2022.

The Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, has also shared new amendments to strengthen the online application platform. Lesufi said the initiative for new and improved changes is to protect the online platform against manipulation.

The new changes and dates for Gauteng schools online application platforms are as follows:

  • Phase one of online applications opens on 10 August 2021 (08:h00am) and closes on 3 September 2021 at midnight.
  • Phase two of the online application will start on 13 September 2021 (08:h00am) and closes on the 8 October at midnight.
  • Phase one placements will start on 15 October 2021 until 30 November 2021.
  • Phase two Placements will start on 15 November 2021 until 30 November 2021.

Lesufi also said the department has identified 47 centres for walk-in applications with no access to the electronic technology used to apply. This would mean people without data or access to internet will be able to apply.

The MEC continued to say that information about the walk-in centres will be made available through social media platforms and community centres.

Parents are urged to provide accurate learner and parents details to schools where their children are currently studying their Grade 7. These are in line with the phase one requirements process where children will be moving from Grade 7 to Grade 8.

The department said from 2 August 2021 to 6 August 2021 primary schools will be verifying parents and learner details. The verification process includes, Identity documents, Cellphone number and home address.

This process will help with identifying parents and learners and their proximity to schools. This is also to ensure that people outside Gauteng are not prioritized before people residing in the Gauteng province.

Lesufi said the contact number used by the parents to communicate with the department must be reliable as it will be used for sms communication by the department.

He also said the notification process is important as the department will be sending sms with a link to parents to complete the 5 steps of the application process on 10 November 2021.

Parents are required to identify five schools they would want their children to go to as part of the application process.

The Placement Criteria for both Phases in order of priority is:

  1. Home address within school’s feeder zone
  2. Sibling/precious schools
  3. Work address within school’s feeder zone
  4. Home address within 30km radius
  5. Home address beyond 30km radius

Lesufi urges parents to apply early and provide the necessary documents.

This application process includes foreign learners whose requirements will be slightly different.

Further communication will be made through the Gauteng education department website, social media, and community centres.
