First School Learner Tests Positive


The first school learner in South Africa has tested positive for Coronavirus in Cape Town.  The child is a grade 9 learner at Herzlia school and the private school had already taken the precaution to close all 8 of its campuses when the child, and their father were tested earlier in the week.

The first school learner in South Africa has tested positive for the latest Coronavirus outbreak.  Herzlia United Schools in Cape Town confirmed on Friday night that a grade 9 learner and their father had both tested positive.  The learner's siblings have tested negative. The private school had already closed all of its 8 campuses earlier in the week when they first became aware that the father was being tested. He had recently returned from the United States.

  • With the Covid-19 outbreak it has been noticed that children usually show very mild symptoms when they are infected and make a quick recovery. However they can infect others, and older people, or those with other health concerns will become much sicker from the illness.

    The Western Cape government has confirmed that they have conducted 134 tests and only 3 have come back as positive.  All of the positive cases have been from individuals who have recently returned from Europe. 

    Old Mutual announced on Friday that a staff member who had recently returned from an overseas trip had tested positive.

    The South African government has announced that they will be holding a special Cabinet Meeting on Sunday afternoon when they will be discussing the Covid-19 outbreak and what actions they should take to control the spread in South Africa.

    The EFF has called for infected South Africans to be placed in official public quarantine sites, rather than simply being self isolated at home.  They have even suggested Robben Island as a location! Robben Island of course was once a leper colony so the EFF seems to want to turn things full circle!
