First Baby Dies Of Covid In SA

Along with the daily Covid-19 statistics for the country Health Minister Zweli Mkhize releases, he also announced that the first baby has died from Covid-19 in South Africa. 

In his statement that gets released daily to inform citizens of the coronavirus cases, deaths, recoveries and tests statistics, Minister Zweli Mkhize from the Department of Health also announced that South Africa has had it's first neonatal death as a result of Covid-19.

Dr Mkhize said, "Sadly, we have recorded the first neonatal mortality related to Covid-19" which was a 2 day old prematurely born baby. 

Due to being born prematurely, the baby then had difficulties in the lungs which needed ventilation support immediately after being birthed. 

The baby's mother tests positive for Covid-19 which is how the baby contracted the virus. 

South Africa currently stands at a total of 18,003 confirmed cases of Covid-19 while the death toll comes to 339. Recoveries are at 8950. The total active cases in the country is 8714. 

Minister Mkhize has said, "We extend a special word of comfort to the mother of this chuld and salute the neonatologists, nurses and all allied and technical personnel who had the difficult task of caring for the neonate to the end.
