The Department of Education has finally came through for everyone interested in the teacher assistant posts. They have now shared the highly anticipated information through its social platforms for the interested candidates to apply.

The teacher assistant posts have been a topical issue within the education sector as unemployment in the country hits the youth hard.

These posts are being offered through the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) as part of the Presidential Employment Initiative.

What Jobs Are Available?

  • To work as General Assistants within the school.
  • To assist with teaching and learning programs in the school.
  • Candidates will also help with infrastructure Maintainance.
  • Candidates will offer Psychosocial and Counselling support.
  • They will work as sports and enrichment assistants.

For the Education Assistants (EAs), there are +- 192 000 positions and there are +- 95 000 General School Assistants (GSAs) positions. Note that candidates are shortlisted based on their eligibility which includes: matching the criteria, proximity in school, and community involvement. 

What Happens If I Don't Live Near A School And get Shortlisted?

Please make sure that you give the correct address because should you be selected while you don't live within the proximity of the school, your appointment will be terminated with immediate effect. Candidates must live within a walking distance of the school they applied to. 

How Long Is The Contract For?

The contract is 5 months starting from 01 November 2021 - 31 March 2021.

How Much Are The Earnings?

The stipend is R3817.44 per month minus R38pm UIF contribution.

Which Schools Are Included In The Programme?

The Ordinary Public schools including Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN).

The School within the 9 Provincial Education Department (PEDs).

Each school will get a minimum of 10/ 15 Assistants which also depends on the size of the school. 

Who Should Apply For The Opportunity?

  • Ages 18-35 years and must not be 36 years before 31 March 2022, except for LSEN schools where age is not a limit. 
  • Must live within the area where the school is located
  • Only one person will be considered per household
  • Must be unemployed and not studying or in training
  • Must not be receiving NSFAS or Funza Lushaka Bursaries
  • People receiving social grants such as R350 SRD grant, disability, and child grant. 
  • Must not have a criminal record
  • Must meet the category requirements per job.

What Are The Required Documents Do I Need To Apply?

  • Certified Copy of your ID
  • Matric Certificate or equivalent where applicable
  • Your CV
  • A reference letter from the former school, local chief/ counselor, church leader or previous employer.  

What Additional Information Required Should I Be Selected?

  • Police Clearance Certificate must be submitted within 2 months of the appointment.
  • Declaration letter confirming that the candidate is not employed, studying, training, and not receiving any form of income.  

If The Candidates are Successful, Will They Be Vaccinated?

It is advised that all successful candidates be vaccinated at the time of the appointment. All selected candidates will be within the required age group to get vaccinated and can visit the nearest vaccination site to get vaccinated prior to the appointment. 

Do I need To Reapply If I Worked As a Teacher Assistant At A School Before?

Yes, everyone must reapply for the teacher assistant role regardless if they have worked as one before. Candidates are advised to apply to the same school, if they performed well in their previous appointment, it will work in their favor during the interview process. 

Why Are Students Excluded along with Distance Learning Students?

The Presidential Employment initiative is meant for the youth that is not already in employment, studying, or in training.

When Does This Programme Begin?

The program interviews are expected to start from 11 October 2021 and the selected candidates will resume work on 1 November 2021. 

Where Can I Apply?

Interested candidates can apply with SA Youth website, Moya App, Tshepo 1Million, and Harambee.

Applications will be closing on 03 October 2021.

How Will I Know If My Application Have Been Received?

Once you have applied the mobi site will send you a notification to acknowledge your application. If you reapply the site will also confirm that your application has already been received. 

How Will I Know If My Application is Successful?

Note that the shortlisted candidates at a school are not successful, but they will be contacted by the relevant schools for an interview. Once a candidate has applied, they must not contact SA Youth and ask if their application was successful, the respective schools will manage the interview and the application process. 

When Will You Be Notified If Your Application is Successful?

Note that if you have not been contacted by the school you applied to by 24 October 2021, then your application was unsuccessful.
