EFF Protest At Brackenfell High Turns Violent

Stun grenades and police are not what you would expect at a peaceful protest. Following allegations of racism at Brackenfell High School in Cape Town, the EFF decided to protest outside the school but things got out of hand quickly.

The Economic Freedom Front (EFF) planned to carry out a peaceful protest to the school with 100 participants. The turnout was bigger than expected and police used stun grenades to disperse the crowd that gathered near the school too early.

The permit only allowed for 100 people to go near the school while being escorted by the police. There was some confusion in the crowd as the police told the EFF that the rest of the crowd would have to be left behind while the memorandum was being handed over.

The EFF hoped to hand over a memorandum to the school, following the incident which took place a few weeks ago.

The protest follows allegations of racism which broke out after a group of parents at Brackenfell High School held a matric dance which only included white learners at the school.

Some parties have taken different sides, as the Democratic Alliance did not regard it as a race issue. Western Cape Education MEC, Debbie Schäfer has been against the EFF and members of the public protesting near the school.

"I call on Brackenfell residents not to gather at the school with a view to engaging in altercations. Any action that would escalate tensions further will make it harder for law enforcement authorities to do their jobs. Please do not take the law into your own hands." said MEC Debbie Schäfer in a statement.

The EFF, however has continued with its protest action despite the school denying allegations of racism.
