EFF Claims NSFAS Turned Into A "Mafia Operation"

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are now calling for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to remove the Administrator from his position. They now claiming that the Administrator has turned the financial aid scheme into a 'mafia operation'.

A statement from the EFF read:

The Economic Freedom Fighters call for the immediate resignation of the compromised and corrupt administrator of the National Student's Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Randall Carolissen for his corruption, which has rendered the entity unworkable.

Carolissen has recently had to defend his reputation and job as many allegations of maladministration and nepotism are laid against him. In a meeting with the Portfolio Committee on Friday, Carolissen gave responses to all the allegations against him.

The political party goes on to say, "Carolissen has essentially turned NSFAS into a mafia operation, enriching his friends and close associates, while intimidating staff and subjecting them to a hostile working environment".

These recent allegations have come from the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) and NSFAS employees which the EFF says relayed accounts which were 'alarming' and 'gruelling'. They are now saying that Carolissen has made the organisation into "the personal cash cow of a self-serving individual".

"He confessed to submitting CVs of those associated to him to the Human Resource Department of NSFAS, and all those referred by him have secured posts in strategic positions in the entity," said the EFF. This was brought forward during Carolissen's meeting with the Committee and will be looked into as other members of Parliament were not happy with it as well.

It is therefore clear that the problems confronting the financial aid scheme ... can be traced to the thuggery practices by Carolissen.

On a number of occasions, Carolissen has gone to the Portfolio Committee and defended his position and provided evidence that he has made improvements at the financial aid scheme and despite being in the middle of a pandemic, NSFAS has managed to somewhat keep the ball rolling as they normally would.

The EFF is said to favour the position of employees and are commending them for "standing up and exposing Carolissen as the crook that he is" and that they will be securing the future of thousands of students due to their actions.

The Minister in charge of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, along with the Deputy Minister, Buti Manamela, have previously shown their support for the Administrator and the work he's done.

Nzimande said of Carolissen, "On my side, I want to put it on record that I think he has done a sea change in terms of what NSFAS was and some of the challenges of the organisation". Manamela too has previously said, "As far as we’re concerned, NSFAS has stabilised over the last two years ... There has not been a substantiation of the allegations of corruption and maladministration."

The EFF has now said that they will approach the Public Protector to investigate and they claim that they will make sure that NSFAS is rescued from "the hands of a gloarified gangster".
