Eastern Cape Intern-Nurses Frustrated With Staying Home

Over 600 Eastern Cape intern-nurses are sitting at home without work as their community service training was terminated on 31 January.

Some of the nurses were only told on the last day that they will not be employed permanently by the Department of Health as they had hoped and expected.

One of these nurses took to social media to express how she felt being qualified and without work during the pandemic.

Nomvu Makata posted a 35-minute video on social media, expressing the anguish and pain she felt as a result of this decision.

Currently, meetings are being held to deal with this issue.

Makata believes that this is an urgent matter as nurses are essential workers, especially during this time.

They have proven that they are capable of easing the pressure on the healthcare system as they have helped during the height of the pandemic.
