Delays With Almost A Million UIF-TERS Payments

Due to backlogs and technical glitches, the Unemployment Insurance Fund has not paid almost a million UIF applicants and recipients. This sees many who have seen financial difficulty due to Covid-19 not receive payment from TERS funds.

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has seen delays in Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) payments due to experiencing technical glitches and backlogs. These system issues have also affected registration for the TERS fund.

Almost a million South Africans who are currently undergoing financial difficulties due to Covid-19 could not receive payment or register to receive funds from TERS. This also sees those who have not received an income since the beginning of lockdown not receive the financial assistance they need.

The reason for these technical issues is reported to be a result of a shut down at UIF after it showed applicants' confidential details. This then lead to a technical glitch which saw many beneficiaries not showing up on the system.

This glitch resulted in R4.2bn in unpaid claims. TERS was set up to assist those who have had their salaries affected during lockdown.
