The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Dr. Blade Nzimande has passed his condolences to the families, friends, and the entire Umngungundlovu TVET College community on their loss.
Northlink TVET College has also conveyed sincere condolences to the affected families, mourning the passing of their loved ones.
It has been reported that five students and an employee of this college had passed on after a fatal accident on the N3 highway around Escourt.
This incident took place on 10 April 2022, when the group was traveling from the TVET athletics games, held in Polokwane.
The identified victims are as follows:
Sakhiwo Zuma (College Co-Curricular Officer)
Nobuhle Radebe (Edendale Campus)
Thembeka Zuma (Midlands Campus)
Anele Dlomo (Plessislaer Campus)
Mamelo Lerara (Plessislaer Campus)
Khanyisile Khoza (Edendale campus)
It has been reported that one students from this team, Siphokazi Gambu (Msunduzi Campus) had been hospitalised after having sustained injuries during this incident.
Nzimande wishes Gambu a speedy recovery.
According to the paramedics, the crash was caused by a vehicle that was traveling northbound (in Johannesburg's direction).
In a Higher Education statement, it is written:
The Minister has directed the uMgungundlovu TVET college management and Higher Health to provide the necessary support and comfort to the families of the deceased and to provide further care to students admitted to the hospital.
It has been reported that funeral arrangements will be announced after families have made their conclusions.
