Calls For Early Childhood Centres To Reopen

The South African Montessori Association has called for the government to allow Early Childhood Development Centres (ECD) to reopen.

The association says the continued closure of ECDs has negative effects on parents and will result in the loss of jobs for many. There are currently 30 000 ECDs that are at risk of permanently closing down due to the covid-19 regulations.

"We cannot sustain the overheads that go, particularly in the private sector, with four months of closure. It's not possible. ECDs are not profit-generating organisations, they don't have 4 months of reserves to draw from."

The Association is also concerned about the impact that the closure of ECDs will have on single women who work hard to provide for their families.

"That's the question that every one of those women have to face every morning. Do I go to my job or do I leave my children unsupervised?"

The Montessori Association is calling for a differentiated approach to be taken as a way to determine when a school is ready to reopen.

"ECDs, for the most part, are ready to open. If DSD shifted their energy towards allowing those who are ready to open, and those who are not ready give them the support they need to be able to open."
