Five lecturers from the Eastern Cape Community Education and Training (CET) College were found dead on 23 November 2021 after being involved in a car crash in which their light motor vehicle collided with a truck.

Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande has expressed his condolences to the families of these lecturers, namely Ms Vuyiswa Tenza, Ms Nkatleheng Nkunjana, Ms Mamokgeseng Motsatsi-Rajwili, Ms Thabile Valashiya and Ms Mapaseka Sekonyela.

These lecturers were from Mount Fletcher and surrounding areas in the Eastern Cape. They had been on their way home from Mthatha when the car crash took place.

I am deeply distressed by the news of such a loss to families and our sector. These bright lights of the Post-School Education and Training system were also final-year Durban University of Technology Advanced Diploma (Adult and Continuing Education and Training in Teaching) students,

The Minister has directed the Department of Higher Education and Training to ensure that the lecturers’ families and close colleagues receive the necessary support and comfort as they grieve.

A memorial service will be held by the Eastern Cape CET College on Wednesday 1 December 2021.

“As we mourn this loss, let us also express wishes that in their memory we all commit to build a community education and training sector we can all be proud of, and may their souls rest in eternal peace,” added Minister Nzimande.
