Children aged 12 to 17 will soon be next in line to receive their vaccination jabs. The Health Department said that it is making arrangements for the vaccination rollout to begin next week.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla announced on Friday that next week Wednesday on 22 October 2021, children aged between 12 and 17 will now be eligible for vaccination.

He said that the Pfizer vaccine would be rolled out to this age group.

The minister added that the service will start on 20 October to allow necessary preparation on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) registration system and also other logistical preparations.

The last age group to be placed on the EVDS system for eligibility were persons aged between 18 to 35 on 20 August 2021.

As it stands, 10.2 million South Africans have been fully vaccinated which translates to 17.2% of the population with 19.7 million doses given. The Department of Health aims to vaccinate 67% of the population by the end of 2021, which will allow us to achieve herd immunity.
