The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) distributes monthly grants to vulnerable, low-income citizens across the country.

More than 18 million people living in South Africa are beneficiaries of permanent grants distributed by Sassa. There are several different entities they can visit to collect their grant payments.

These permanent grants include Older Person grants, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top Up, Grant-in-aid, as well as the SRD (R350) grant.

These grants are paid to beneficiaries from the first week of every new month. Payments commence on the second day of every month. If the second day falls on a weekend or public holiday, the grant will be distributed on the following working day.

Where To Collect Your Sassa Grant Payments For July 2023

Bank Account

Permanent grant beneficiaries have the option of having their grants paid directly into their bank account. This is a convenient grant payment method as beneficiaries can access their money at any time after the payment was made by Sassa.

Retail outlets

Sassa grants are paid to selected retailers around the country. The vast geographical footprint of retail outlets makes it easy for grant recipients to find one close to where they live. Beneficiaries can withdraw their money at any time when the retail outlet is operational.

Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer stores, Usave stores and Checkers all distribute social grants.

Post Office

Beneficiaries can collect their grants at Post office branches around the country. However, they are only able to collect their grants during pre-determined time frames and on official payment dates.

Mobile Cash Pay Points

There are also mobile cash pay points where grant beneficiaries can collect their money. However, this is not a flexible payment option and beneficiaries may only collect their grant payment for a few hours during a grant payment cycle.

In May 2023, Sassa announced that it would extend the validity of gold cards until the end of the year. This is because millions of Sassa gold cards were set to expire in the coming months.

Additionally, Sassa introduced a payment method which allows beneficiaries to collect their money with a Sassa card

Sassa social grant payment delays have been a cause for concern for most impacted grant beneficiaries. However, although the agency meets its monthly obligations, its vast payment network facilitated by Post Bank also encounters challenges in its disbursement model.
