The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has revealed the timeline of the fifth phase of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI). This indicates when successful teaching assistant applicants will start work. 

Phase 5 of the BEEI is set to create more than 200,000 job opportunities at schools around the country. Youth can be employed reading champions, reading assistants, e-cadres/ICT assistants, CSAs, Handypersons, Sports and Enrichment Assistants, Laboratory Assistants, and Workshop assistants.

When Teaching Assistants Will Start Work 

The DBE confirmed that assistance  will begin work on 2 June 2025. Successful candidates will earn a R4,000 monthly stipend for six months, plus R30 for data. 

Interview and Contracting

According to the official timeline, the ranking of applications against the eligibility criteria is currently underway and will conclude on 18 May 2025. Following this, the shortlisting process will commence from 19 to 26 May 2025.

Shortlisted candidates will receive an SMS invitation for an interview from either the school or the relevant Provincial Education Department (PED) between 19 and 31 May 2025.

The final stage of the current recruitment drive involves the contracting of successful candidates. The DBE expects that all selections and contracting procedures should be completed by 31 May 2025.

For those who do not receive an invitation for an interview by 1 June 2025, their applications should be considered unsuccessful. SAYouth has clarified that they will not be able to provide individual feedback on applications.
