The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a crucial support mechanism for unemployed individuals living in South Africa, as it ensures that vulnerable individuals receive some money to support themselves with the basics. Millions of people would have applied for July 2025, but not everyone would have been successful.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has said that there are a number of circumstances under which applications for the SRD grant may be declined.

Why Your SRD Grant Application Was Declined

Your application might be rejected because you do not meet some of the eligibility requirements, for reasons such as:

  1. Sassa finds that as an applicant, you have been employed and have made income tax contributions.
  2. Your personal details do not match the information from the Department of Home Affairs.
  3. You are a current recipient of a social grant other than a child grant.
  4. You are registered with and benefit from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
  5. You qualify for UIF benefits based on TERS, UIF contributions, or are currently receiving UIF payments.
  6. You are employed in a government institution.
  7. You do not meet the age requirements or are over the age of 60.
  8. You are listed as deceased on the Department of Home Affairs database.
  9. You receive more than R624 in your bank account during the month.

However, Sassa encourages those rejected from the SRD grant to not immediately reapply. Sassa Spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi, explained that if people reapply for the SRD grant after their first application is rejected, the system will automatically reject their second application.

What To Do

Instead of reapplying, you should submit an SRD grant appeal. The SRD grant appeal process is available to those who believe their application was unfairly rejected.

Applicants can submit their appeals online through the Sassa appeals website. When submitting the appeal, individuals must provide supporting documentation to substantiate their claim. This may include proof of income, identity documents, and other relevant information.

How To Appeal Your R370 Sassa Grant Rejection For July

  1. Visit the ITSAA website.
  2. Enter your South African ID number.
  3. Enter the cell phone number used during the application process.
  4. Click "Send Pin" and wait for an SMS with a verification code.
  5. Once you receive the pin, enter it and click "Submit."
  6. Select the month for which you are appealing.
  7. Choose the reason for your appeal from the provided options.
  8. Click "Submit" to complete the appeal process.

The SRD appeals are evaluated by an Independent Tribunal, ensuring a fair and impartial process.

If your appeal is successful, you will receive an SMS notification. If you don't hear back within 90 days, you can check the status of your appeal online.

How to Check Your SRD Grant Appeal Status for July

If you’ve submitted an appeal, you can check the status to see whether the ITSAA has upheld or overturned Sassa’s decision. Here’s how:

  1. Visit the Sassa Appeals Website: Go to the official Sassa appeals site.
  2. Enter Your Information: Provide your ID number and cell phone number.
  3. Track Your Appeal: Click "Track Appeal."

If your appeal is unsuccessful, you may need to take further action, such as approaching the High Court for a review.
