Parents, teachers, principals and the departments of education across the country are now preparing for the 2025 school year, which includes the processing of school admission applications. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has now released application dates for parents wanting a school transfer for the 2025 school year.

School transfer applications for grade 2-7 and 9-12 will open on 1 August.

How WCED School Transfer Applications Work

School transfer applications in the Western Cape must be done at the school in which the parent/caregiver wishes to apply to or their nearest WCED office. Schools can only capture applications for their own school, but district officials can capture applications for multiple schools.

Parents and guardians will then need to submit the WCED application form and submit it, along with any relevant documents, at the school or district office. The application form and documents can be submitted online, should the school avail that option.

Documents Required

  • The last school report card;
  • ID, birth certificate, passport, study permit or proof of application or police affidavit; and
  • Proof of address or police affidavit.

School transfer applications are done separately to Grade R, 1 and 8 school admission applications.

Grade R Applications

Grade R applications for 2025 will open on 1 August 2024. Parents of children turning six in 2025 can apply for 2025 admission at a Western Cape school.

Parents who wish to apply for Grade R or a school transfer for the 2025 school year can do so from 1 August 2024.

Applications for Grade R can be completed online on the WCED online admissions website.

"Parents who have not registered on the online system previously will first need to register on the online site. Once registration is completed, they can then proceed to the application," said the WCED.

Grade 1 & 8 Applications

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is now accepting school enrollment applications for 2025 for Grade 1 and 8 only, with applications having opened on 11 March.

2025 WCED school admission initial applications period closed on 12 April, giving parents and guardians a month to apply. Late applications were then open until 12 May.

The WCED had urged parents who have not yet submitted admission applications to contact a WCED district office for assistance with 2025 school applications.

Alternatively, parents can visit a school and request help with submitting an admissions application. However, this does not necessarily mean the application is for that particular school; the school is simply assisting with capturing the information.

Parents can also call the WCED admission office on 0861 819 919 between 7:30 AM and 5 PM.

The WCED also encourages parents who have relocated to the Western Cape after the admissions period to contact district education offices for admission assistance.
