Students at Unisa have been voicing their need to be treated the same as other University students do for quite some time. Now, Zizikazi Ndongwe, a Unisa student has set up a petition called 'Unisa Students also deserve Laptops and an increase of monthly allowance to at least R750'.
This petition addresses the Minister and has over 12,000 signatures already, with it's goal being 15,000.
Ndongwe wants Unisa students to get the same benefits as students at other Universities and feel that they "are excluded from a lot of things". They feel a need to be taken seriously as an institution even if they are a distance learning University.
Students want to get laptops, just like other Universities and NSFAS have provided for their students. She also said that not all Unisa students work and that they " would also like an increase of our allowance to R750, we are also struggling".
Another Unisa student has said, "Unisa is no longer for working class only. We all need to be treated like any other universities because we all contribute to the same society at the end. Laptops and allowances must be equivalent with other universities. My voice matters".
