With the country’s job market improving at a slow rate, having a job can come in handy, especially if you're a tertiary student. Here are some available student job vacancies for students at Rhodes University.

​​​​​Are you a Rhodes University student who is looking to take up a student job at the university? Then the vacancies listed below might interest you.

  • Sub-wardening in a student residence or as an Oppidan sub-warden are two available options for sub-wardening.
  • In some cases, students can also tutor within academic departments   Graduate Assistant Bursaries are offered where an individual has to commit to work for 156 hours in the academic department. This work may include tutoring but is likely to also involve administrative work in the academic department
  • Drivers participating in the Dean of Students Division's Get Home Safe Project,
  • Students also assist Hall Wardens with disciplinary matters.
  • Administrative work in the Library is also an available option.
  • Administrative work in the Registrar’s Division
  • Administrative work in various sectors of the University's administration
  • Work at the Rhodes Health Suite as a fitness instructor or as a coach with the Sports Administration section
  • You can also work as a Stoodge (student helper) at one of the local schools with hostels
  • Working in any of the businesses in Grahamstown – typically as service personnel, waitrons or bar personnel.
  • Sports Coaching
  • Stooging
  • Freelance Writing
  • IT Division

Additionally, there are two main methods in which students might find work:

  1. Law students were targeted for deliberate recruiting for a specific position, such as academic departments advertising for tutors, drivers on the Get Home Safe Project, and Students Assisting Hall Wardens.;
  2. A needy department in the university will collect from a file holding applications from students searching for part-time or ad hoc work.

However, there are a few restrictions placed on international students seeking work at the university: 

  • According to the Immigration Act 2002 (Act 13 of 2002), Immigration Regulations, non-South African students are prohibited from working part-time for more than 20 hours a week. This stipulation remains in place for the whole school year
  • Students who are in contravention of the Act, may have any part-time work appointment terminated without notice.
