The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has opened Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applications for 2025. Individuals who need financial assistance and meet the eligibility requirements can apply for the grant. 

Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant?

To qualify for the SRD grant in South Africa, applicants must meet certain criteria. They need to be citizens, residents, or special permit holders, but they shouldn't receive other government support in the form of UIF benefits or NSFAS bursaries. Their bank account should have less than R624 to be eligible for the R350 grant.

Sassa conducts verification checks in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs for identity and citizenship verification, and shares bank details with the Department of Treasury for income verification. Once eligibility is confirmed, Sassa proceeds with payments, which accounts for the end-of-month payment schedule.

How to Apply for the SRD Grant

To apply for the SRD grant, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the SRD grant website.
  2. Choose your citizenship status at the bottom of the webpage. Select "South African ID Holder" or "Asylum Seeker/Special Permit Holder."
  3. Locate the yellow bar labelled "Click here to apply online" under the relevant section ("How do I apply for this SRD Grant" or "Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders").
  4. Enter your mobile number and click "Send SMS." Then, input the one-time pin (OTP) sent by Sassa to your phone for verification.
  5. Once verified, follow the prompts on the website to complete your application.

Where To Collect SRD Grant Payments

If you have been approved for an SRD grant payment in 2025, you have two collection options. You can either have your SRD grant paid directly into your bank account or collect the money at a supermarket.

Supermarkets authorised to pay SRD Grants include Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, USave, Shoprite, OK, and Spar.
